The UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize Winner 2011 was named on the 7th April.

Iranian journalist, Ahmad Zeidabadi was congratulated by Hilary Clinton, along with his fellow activists, who have all been banned for life from political or civic activities.

Clinton announced that the US would continue to stand up for the rights of the Iranian people, through the UN and the UN Human Rights Council.

Mr Zeidabadi worked for, most notably, BBC Persia and reformist newspaper, Hamshahri. He is secretary general for the Office for Strengthening Unity, a member of numberous reformist movements as well as a member of Iran’s Journalists’ Union.

Zeidabadi is also the winner of the World Association of Newspapers' Golden Pen of Freedom Award for 2010.

He has been behind bars for 774 days and has never been granted furlough from prison during this time.
