Iran has accused the United States of assassinating a scientist who was working on its nuclear programme.
The US, Israel and many Western nations have opposed Iran’s atomic programme, fearing it may be a front to creating a nuclear bomb. The UN, US and EU have imposed sanctions on Iran that seek to make it more difficult for Iran to acquire equipment and aim at squeezing Iran’s oil and gas industry.
Iran says it is simply doing what it is allowed to do under the treaty and intends to enrich only for power station fuel or other peaceful purposes.
Isna news agency named the Iranian scientist, “Mr Rezaei” and claim he was an expert with links to the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. It was said he was shot dead outside his home in Tehran.
Iran said this week that it was installing faster centrifuges at its nuclear plants, with the aim of speeding up its uranium enrichment process. Enriched uranium can be used for civilian nuclear purposes, but also to build atomic bombs.
