The overthrow of the Assad government - implications for Iran.

Syria has been Iran’s steadfast ally in the region since 1979. However the Syrian government is currently facing huge internal unrest, with the US accusing Iran of influencing Syria not to acquiesce to these protests. It has been suggested that Iran has provided Syria with crowd control and communications equipment.

The motivation for this alleged support is that the overthrow of the Assad regime could be a major foreign policy setback for Iran because the two countries share a strategic interest in Hezbollah.
