Iran as the key to the non-proliferation

Western analysts and media have been arguing for a few years, that Iran and its potential owenrship of nuclear weapons might set a fatal blow for decades-long efforts of non-proliferation, due to its connection with non-state proxies. This might well be true in case Iran actually acquires 'the bomb', but at the same time Teheran might potentially play a crucial role in the acceptance of non-proliferation as a world-wide policy.
If  the international community could succesfully help Iran with its energy needs and fully exploit the means of public and private diplomacy in the region to limit Teheran's quest for nuclear energy, it might well set a precedence and win wide support for further non-proliferation efforts. Therefore, Teheran and not Washington and Moscow should be the main target of the proliferation debates.
