Press TV, the Iranian television station, that is based in London and launched in 2007, could have its licence revoked by the British Media Watchdog.
The grounds for the revocation are based on the fact that Press TV filmed inside Tehran’s infamous Evin Prison. It filmed a Newsweek journalist, London-based Maziar Bahari, who is faced with charges of espionage. In this “interview” Mr Bahari was forced to read a confession, otherwise he was told he would face execution. He was arrested while covering the 2009 electoral protests against President Ahmadinejad.
Ofcom accuses Press TV of infringing his privacy. The Foreign and Commonwealth Offices went so far as to state “Press TV’s actions are unacceptable and reprehensible” and “ it had been concerned for some time by serious allegations that Press TV has been involved in broadcasting allegations obtained under duress”.
