The ongoing struggle to get Iran to halt is uranium enrichment has proved futile. Any future progress in dealing with Iran will depend on the success of bringing Israel to the “nuclear negotiating table”.
Egypt is leading the non-aligned nations to push for a conference next year on turning the Middle East into a nuclear free weapon region. This push is also supported by the Russians who want to help avoid a potential regional and global catastrophe. The Obama Administration has also positioned a non-proliferation regime at the centre of its foreign policy.
In 1995 a resolution was adopted to strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to win Arab support for this initiative. Whilst America supported this proposal, it was never implemented.
Dialogue about the chances of achieving a nuke free Middle East is a hot topic nowadays. A precondition for Israel to accept a nuke free region is for regional peace to be established. Whilst this prospect is still a long way off, countries are united in their attempts to avoid any nuclear war within the region.
