Agence France-Presse - 24 October, 2006Iran has said more than 247,000 people had registered to stand in the December 15 municipal polls, quelling fears insufficient numbers were putting themselves forward.
Monday's announcement indicated a last-minute rush in registration -- which ended on Sunday -- after election officials urged citizens to come forward and warned the registration period would not be extended.
